Federal Law Enforcement Training Center Purchases 28 Driver Training Simulators from MPRI for New, State-of-the-Art Facility

ALEXANDRIA, Va. — The Federal Law Enforcement Training Center (FLETC), an interagency training organization for more than 80 federal agencies, as well as state, local and international law enforcement agencies, announced today that it has awarded a contract with options to purchase 28 PatrolSim™ IV driver training simulators from MPRI, an L-3 Communications company and global provider of vehicle and maritime simulation products, training and services. The simulators will be housed in FLETC’s brand new, state-of-the-art training facility in Glynco, Ga., near Brunswick. Installation of the simulators will begin in July of this year, with all 28 units installed by July 2007.

The driver simulators will be located in the Simulation Laboratory in Glynco, Ga., a new, 40,000-square foot building composed of an open bay area for simulators as well as eight simulation labs designed to facilitate table-top computer-based simulation exercises. The facility will open later this year.

FLETC serves as the Federal government’s leader for and provider of world-class law enforcement training. They prepare new and experienced law enforcement professionals to fulfill their responsibilities in a safe manner and at the highest level of proficiency. FLETC also ensures that training is provided in the most cost-effective manner by taking advantage of economies of scale available only from a consolidated law enforcement training organization.

“FLETC strives to provide the highest level of training to ensure the safety of our nation’s law enforcement officers and agents and the general public,” said Terry Tucker, senior vice president, MPRI. “By selecting the PatrolSim IV from MPRI, FLETC will provide the most advanced driver training to its students, establishing the center as a leader not only in training but also as an early adopter of world-class technology. We are excited to be a part of that success.”

Over the past two years FLETC conducted extensive, global market research on driving simulators and issued a Request for Information that resulted in a full and open competition utilizing General Services Administration (GSA) schedules. The PatrolSim IV from MPRI met all of FLETC’s requirements and also provided the best value.

The PatrolSim IV complements existing training by enabling drivers to train for critical, high-risk tasks that are too dangerous and/or costly to be conducted frequently in vehicles, e.g. driving on ice, fording streams, driving under blackout conditions, and driving down steep embankments when coming off an improved road. It features high resolution graphics on plasma displays to provide unmatched realism, and comprehensive training with hundreds of POST Certified Scenarios consisting of traffic stops, pursuits, multiple vehicles, emergency responses, etc. It also features the Instructor Operating Station, which allows the instructor to track, record and play back the movements of multiple networked simulators, which is ideal for coordinated pursuits.

By utilizing simulators to supplement and reinforce their actual non-emergency, skid control, and emergency driving, FLETC will reduce the frequency and severity of vehicle-related operational accidents involving law enforcement officers, which are the greatest liability for loss of life on duty.
