Reid® Trained Investigators Have 99% of Their Confessions Admitted at Trial

For Immediate Release

Every year thousands of law enforcement, government and private sector investigators attend The Reid Technique of Interviewing and Interrogation® seminars conducted by John E. Reid and Associates, Inc. The techniques taught at these seminars are widely considered to encompass the most effective and successful questioning process in practice today.

In July 2003 John E. Reid and Associates, Inc. surveyed 800 law enforcement officers from Minnesota and Alaska who had attended one of our The Reid Technique of Interviewing and Interrogation® training seminars. The purpose of the survey was to determine their experience with electronically recorded custodial interviews and interrogations. One of the questions inquired about the number of confessions that were admitted at trial. The results from the responding investigators indicated that out of the 3,162 confessions that they had obtained using the procedures taught in The Reid Technique® 3,144 had been admitted at trial, 99.4%.

Defense attorneys frequently retain social psychologists to challenge law enforcement interviewing and interrogation techniques. When these defense experts are faced with a confession obtained by the proper use of the procedures taught in The Reid Technique® they are typically rebuffed by the courts. For examples of their testimony, prosecutor motions and judicial decisions, see our web site – “Critic’s Corner” at www.reid.com (click Helpful Info tab on homepage).

You will also find on the Critic’s Corner a page devoted to the issue of “False Confessions,” and a page specifically designed “For The Media.”
