PLACER COUNTY, Calif. — A Placer County man found himself back in jail five hours after he was released when deputies caught him stashing a bag of chewing tobacco for a minimum-security inmate outside a county building, sheriff’s officials said.

Chad James Greenwood, 30, of Sheridan, was taken into custody at about 11 a.m. Wednesday when a Placer County sheriff’s jail intelligence deputy spotted Greenwood placing a bag outside a county building on Second Street in north Auburn, deputies said.

The building happens to be a place where minimum-security inmates work during the day.

After getting caught, Greenwood told deputies he had just been released from the South Placer Jail that morning and had his girlfriend, 37-year-old Regina Willis, take him to cash a check.
