WARE COUNTY, Ga. — A corrections officer is still recovering at a hospital more than a week after he was injured during a disturbance at a prison.

News4Jax.com reported that Capt. Mack Payne, an Army veteran and father of four, was one of two staff members injured during the disturbance at the Ware State Prison. Three inmates were also injured during the unrest.

Payne, who recently tested postive for COVID-19, has a long road to recovery, according to Sharelle Correnthi, the mother of his children.

“He’s definitely a fighter and he’s going to keep fighting. He has his kids to fight for,” she said.

A GoFundMe has been created to raise funds for Payne’s ongoing medical bills.

An investigation into the disturbance at the prison is ongoing.
