A Corrections1 member in Smyrna, Delaware submitted this contraband tip. Here is his description:
“In the past few weeks we have discovered a new way that inmates have been getting contraband into the facility. The inmates are having their families and friends take ordinary straws like the ones you get from fast food places and melting down one end. They place the contraband (tobacco, drugs, etc.) in the straw and melt the other end. They purchase inexpensive toothpaste (aim seems to be the choice at our place) and displace some of the toothpaste and stick the sealed straws in the toothpaste through the spout. The toothpaste is then placed back in the box and re-sealed. Our staff has found that if you dispense a small portion of the toothpaste, and re-cap it you can bend the main shaft of the toothpaste and feel if it’s hard or rigid. We then cut the bottoms open to find the contraband.”
