COLUMBUS, Ga. — Muscogee County Sheriff John Darr said Monday night that Muscogee County corrections officer Juan A. Merritt has been arrested and charged with arson.

Merritt has also been charged with criminal damage of property in the second degree.

Merritt is accused of setting a vehicle he owned on fire.

Darr said he is embarrassed by the incident because he always preaches ethics to the personnel in his department.

“We have already terminated him,” Darr said.

According to Muscogee County Jail officials, Merritt is scheduled to appear in Municipal Court on Wednesday at 8:30 a.m.
