PENN YAN, N.Y. — A Yates County correctional officer was charged with driving while intoxicated and immediately terminated after showing up to work under the influence, according to the Yates County Sheriff’s Office.
The sheriff’s office said the 32-year-old correctional officer consumed alcohol before driving his personal vehicle to the county jail around 3 p.m. on Oct. 29. Upon arrival, Hansen was given field sobriety tests, taken into custody and later released on uniform traffic tickets after a chemical test.
“Our staff handled the situation exactly the way we would hope — in a professional manner, taking all factors into account,” the sheriff’s office said in a statement. “When hired, our expectation is that each and every member of the Sheriff’s Office be a representation of the county, the Sheriff’s Office, their profession, their co-workers and the community.”
The agency urged anyone struggling with alcohol or substance abuse to seek help before it’s too late.
“If you, a family member, a friend, or a co-worker is struggling with alcohol or substance abuse, please get help. If you wait, it can be too late and may eventually cost you or someone else their job, their family, or a life. Drunk or drugged driving is a crime and not worth the risk.”
