Force-feeding NY inmate OK’d

Judge permits action due to hunger strike

FISHKILL, N.y. — Officials at a state prison in Fishkill are authorized to force-feed an inmate who is refusing to eat and drink, according to Dutchess County Court documents.

Dutchess County Court Judge Peter Forman ruled Wednesday that prison officials can feed Jose Shomo by tubes or other methods and are permitted to use physical restraints or chemical sedatives, if necessary, according to court documents.

Shomo, 52, is serving a state prison sentence of 25 years to life for second-degree murder and second-degree criminal possession of a weapon convictions in New York City. He is housed at the Fishkill Correctional Facility, according to the state Department of Corrections and Community Supervision.
