Washington — Are there perks to prison life?
According to the US Department of Justice, 4 percent of state inmates and 3 percent of federal inmates entered prison pregnant. Almost all of them receive an exam, and more than half receive some type of care.
Some prisons go a step further than a standard exam and provide nursery programs while moms are in prison. Supports say these programs lower the mothers’ recidivism rates, but others feel the programs violate the child’s constitutional rights.
