SUSSEX COUNTY, N.J. — Inmates at the Sussex County Jail responding to a recent article in the New Jersey Herald are disputing the conditions at the facility and the statements by Sheriff Mike Strada.
A letter written by inmate Daniel Lee states that “inmates have civil rights and are held accountable for our wrongdoings,” Lee said. “So I say why shouldn’t the jail and its officials chosen to run it (sic). The law is the law, it shouldn’t be broken to uphold it.”
Lee has been held on a $50,000 bail at the county jail since Oct. 6 after being arrested and charged with theft, burglary and criminal mischief.
At the heart of the complaints are the sanitary conditions of the county jail, and the inmate’s access to the jail’s law library. According to inmate James Smith, the law library is not “up to par with normal standards” and inmates are routinely denied access to “equipment and materials that can better our minds and make good use of our time.”
