CLARK COUNTY, Nev. — Video footage released Wednesday shows an incident that led to an inmate being assaulted by a Nev. corrections officer.
William Nugent was in the pat down area of the booking process and was asked by the booking officer to remove his coveralls in order to complete the search, according to My News 3.
Nugent complied by throwing the coveralls to the ground. The two men began to argue about who would pick up the clothes and then Nugent was taken behind a counter, out of the video’s range.
Metro Police’s Fiscal Affairs Committee last month unanimously approved to award a $30,000 settlement to William Nugent following the incident in Feb. 2009.
Metro’s legal team said that it was cheaper to pay Nugent now rather than risk a more expensive loss in court later.
However, Clark County Commissioner Steve Sisolak said he wanted more information on the payout.
“I’m a little confused at what I’m seeing here does not seem $30,000 worth to me,” he told NBC 3 while viewing the footage. “I don’t know what happened.”
Court documents reveal that Nugent had several teeth knocked out, was thrown against a wall and kicked repeatedly, according to the reports.
The corrections officer was put on leave for 30 days.
