3 Tenn. escapees apprehended

NEWPORT, Tenn. - Three inmates who escaped Sunday night from the Cocke County jail were captured Monday.

TheTennesseeBureauofInvestigation,theU.S. MarshalsService,NewportPoliceDepartmentand the Cocke County Sheriff’s Office caught Mark Capanyola, James Reed and Joshua Parker near Newport.

The three overpowered a guard Sunday and broke out of the jail about 6:30 p.m.

Capanyola, 24, of Jefferson City and Reed, 34, of Newport are accused of assaulting guard Aaron Douglas, taking his keys and freeing Parker, 29, of Newport before fleeing. All three have violent histories, according to the TBI, and before their capture were briefly added to the agency’s top 10 most wanted list.

Reed was caught on foot near City Park by a Newport police officer. Reed had been jailed on charges that included aggravated child abuse, aggravated assault, theft, evading arrest and DUI.

Parker also was found on foot near the park. He wasconvictedFridayofsecond-degreemurderand attempted rape, stemming from a 2003 attack on 65-year-old Evelyn Lackey. He is also a registered sex offender.

Capanyola was apprehended from a vehicle in the Woodson Road area. He was in the jail on especially aggravated burglary and aggravated robbery charges.

All three face additional charges, but those have not yet been released.
