News Report: Ill. prison plan draws controversy
PONTIAC, Ill. — Help is available for Pontiac Correctional Center employees facing the prison’s planned closure, representatives from various agencies said Tuesday.
They led a series of pre-layoff workshops Tuesday at the Livingston County Safety Complex in Pontiac for prison workers and their families.
Agencies on hand included National City Bank, the Illinois Department of Human Services, AFL-CIO, Livingston Workforce Services, the Illinois Department of Employment Services and the Grundy, Livingston and Kankakee Workforce Board.
They said they will help workers with financial and budget planning, job searches, job placement, training programs and unemployment benefits.
“Our role and responsibility is to provide you with excellent services … and to serve you,” said Ron Morehead, AFL-CIO field representative.
A handful of prison employees attended the morning workshop; two attended in the afternoon.
Another series of workshops is scheduled for Thursday at the public safety complex, 844 W. Lincoln St. They will be at 7:30 a.m., 3:30 p.m. and 11:30 p.m.
