SALINAS, Calif. — A Salinas Valley State Prison inmate has been found guilty of two counts of attempted murder in an attack on two prison officers in 2005.

Gregg Reynolds, 31, was convicted of the charges on Friday, and faces a maximum of life in prison when he is sentenced by Judge Timothy Roberts on Jan. 14.

Reynolds was already serving a life sentence at the Soledad prison when he attacked the two guards using a homemade dagger made of sharpened metal with a black plastic handle, said prosecutor Deborah Gullett. Reynolds stabbed the first officer in the neck from behind, narrowly missing the carotid artery but severing another artery and causing severe bleeding, Gullett said.

When a second officer attempted to subdue Reynolds, the inmate stabbed him several times in the shoulders and arms before two more officers were able to restrain him. The officers also discovered another, similar dagger in Reynolds’ possession, Gullett said.

Reynolds had been incarcerated at Salinas Valley since 1999 after being convicted of two murders and two attempted murders, Gullett said.
