COOK COUNTY, Ill. — A minimum-security inmate working at a loading dock in the Cook County Jail complex Saturday morning discovered a loaded handgun in a pile of laundry about to leave the jail and alerted guards, a jail spokesman said.
The .380-caliber semiautomatic pistol “didn’t make it into the jail -- it was in a loading area,” spokesman Steve Patterson said.
Investigators were talking to inmates and working with federal officials to trace the gun, he said.
