MANATEE COUNTY, Fla. — A man who was sentenced Friday to five years in prison for having a sexual relationship with his daughter and fathering two children with her hanged himself Monday night at the Manatee County Jail.

Michael Mills, 46, was found dead by corrections deputies at about 10:50 p.m. Monday. He was last seen alive during an inmate head count at about 10:15 p.m. Authorities say he used a makeshift rope of sheets and socks from an air conditioning vent to form a noose.

Mills began a relationship with his daughter, Tammie, when she was a minor in Levy County, according to court records. Tammie Mills, who will turn 25 this month, has said she considers Michael Mills her husband. The pair have two daughters together. Both are in the custody of a child welfare agency.

Mills was arrested in February. He faced an additional 10-year sentence in Levy County for related incest charges.
