PHOENIX — It took four TASER shots to subdue an inmate, but not before he injured four correctional officers in the process.

AZ Family reports that one of the officers, Scott Beatty, will require facial reconstruction after he suffered broken bones and bleeding on the brain. He’s currently in the intensive care unit at a local hospital.

Three other officers were also injured, one of them knocked unconscious.

The event began when officers attempted to move an unnamed inmate back to his cell. The inmate, housed in the psychiatric ward, decided to fight back.

“Our guys tried to do the best they could,” said Sheriff Joe Arpaio. “They used a TASER. Evidentially that didn’t have much effect on the 18-year-old.”

The inmate was originally booked into the ward for minor felonies two weeks ago, and now faces assault charges.

Arpaio said that four TASER shots allowed the officers to get the inmate back into his cell, but he was fighting until the very end.

A GoFundMe account has been established to assist with Beatty’s medical treatment costs.
