HORSESHOE BEND, Ark. — Four Arkansas Department of Corrections officers rescued a man from a truck that had rolled backward into a lake on Tuesday.

The Guard Online reports that the officers – Justin Trewyan, Kendall Drinkard, Joseph Spurlock and Ian Ward – were wrapping up a day of fishing when they heard the man screaming for help.

“We could see the truck had rolled backwards into the lake with the man still inside,” one of the officers said.

“We all jumped out of our boats and kayaks and went over to him and asked him if he was OK,” said Drinkard.

The man told the officers that he’d recently had a defibrillator implanted in his chest and he couldn’t get it wet. By then, the water was already up to his waist.

Two of the officers stayed near the sinking vehicle, the other two went to get Spurlock’s truck. They tied a rope from Spurlock’s vehicle to the sinking truck and pulled it out of the water.

The straps broke twice, but the officers persevered. It took an hour to pull the truck out of the water.

Trewyn said they still had a good time, even though they didn’t catch any fish.

“He thanked and thanked us,” he said, speaking of the man they’d rescued. “I felt bad for the guy cause he lost his truck. He was lucky we were there that day.”
