LOWELL, Mass. — Massachusetts authorities, citing an “incredible turn of events,” have arrested three men in connection with the killing of a 15-year-old boy more than 41 years ago.

Police say the body of John Joseph McCabe, of Tewksbury, was found in a vacant lot in September 1969. He was bound with rope, with his eyes and mouth taped shut.

Middlesex District Attorney Gerry Leone said Friday that McCabe was kidnapped after leaving a dance, assaulted by three men and left in the lot to die of asphyxiation.

Sixty-year-old Walter Shelley, of Tewksbury; 59-year-old Edward Allan Brown, of Londonderry, N.H.; and 57-year-old Michael Ferreira, 57, of Salem, N.H., were arrested Thursday and are expected to be arraigned Friday.

Leone did not say what led to the suspects but described it as an “incredible turn of events.”
