SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico — Police in Puerto Rico have arrested six people as they broke up a brief demonstration linked to President Barack Obama’s Tuesday visit to the island.
Demonstrators were trying to hang a banner from a bridge above the route Obama is expected to take during his five-hour trip. The banner urged the president to release the imprisoned Puerto Rican nationalist Oscar Rivera Lopez.
The protesters were detained for allegedly interfering with the firefighters sent to remove them and the banner from the bridge. The police department said in a statement Monday that prosecutors will consider whether to pursue charges against the demonstrators.
