JEFFERSONVILLE, Ind. – A convicted murderer out on parole has been arrested in connection with the murder of a woman.

WBIW reports that Joseph Oberhansley, released after spending 13 years behind bars for the murder of his 17-year-old girlfriend in 1998, has been arrested again on a murder charge.

In an arrest report obtained by WAVE, police were called to the home of Tammy Jo Blanton after she said Oberhansley was outside and trying to get in on Sept. 10.

Officers diffused the situation and sent Oberhansley home around 3 a.m. They were then called back to the address around 10 a.m., discovering a grisly scene: Blanton’s bloody body was in the bathtub, with portions of her skull removed.

Oberhansley admitted to stabbing Blanton to death, and then eating portions of her brain, heart and lungs, according to the arrest report.

According to WAVE, Blanton had identified herself as Oberhansley’s fiancée when posting his bond two months before her murder. Oberhansley was facing strangulation and resisting law enforcement charges, stemming from a bar brawl in March 2013 when he had been found naked and choking a fellow bar patron.

Oberhansley had to be tased before he would comply with an officer’s command to lie on the floor and place his hands to his sides.

Clark County’s chief deputy prosecutor fought for a higher bond, believing that Obserhansley was a dangerous man. Another prosecutor agreed to lower the bond from $25,000 to $5,000, allowing a posting of 10 percent.

“I felt he was dangerous, I was right, he was,” said Jeremy Mull, chief deputy prosecutor. “And he was released without my knowledge. This devastates me.”
