EDISON, N.J. — Calls to toughen prison sentences in New Jersey for people who burglarize residential dwellings were renewed this week following news that four Middlesex County families were victims of home invasions over an 11-day period.

“A few years ago the County Prosecutor’s Association helped sponsor a bill that would have aggressively given police and prosecutors a far better ability to address residential burglaries,” said Robert Bianchi, former Morris County Prosecutor. “I testified before the Legislature on it,” Bianchi said. “But it went nowhere in the Senate.”

Written by Assemblyman Anthony M. Bucco, a R-Morris and Somerset, the bill sought to upgrade the charge for the unlawful break-in of a home from a third-degree offense to a second-degree crime, which would result in a five-to-10 year prison term if convicted.
