GREENWICH, Conn. — A Connecticut man has avoided jail time for posing as a wounded soldier, but will be confined to his home on Veterans Day and Memorial Day as part of his punishment.
An attorney for 21-year-old Jesus Garcia says the Greenwich man has been granted accelerated rehabilitation, a special program for first-time, nonviolent offenders.
Garcia was sentenced in Stamford Superior Court on Friday and ordered to perform community service and attend counseling.
The Greenwich Time reports he must also turn over all military uniforms and memorabilia.
Prosecutors say Garcia claimed he was an Army Ranger wounded during one of his four tours of duty in Afghanistan, but that he actually never served in the military.
The charges against him will be dropped if he completes terms of the rehabilitation program.
