SALEM, N.J. — A man asked his stepmother to help him hide a body after he allegedly killed a person during a drug dispute, according to prosecutors.
NJ.com reports that suspect Dante Spence, 31, stuffed 45-year-old Gary Carter’s body in his closet after killing him on Oct. 30 and called his stepmother for help in disposing the body. His stepmother called a local city council member to report the incident, which was then relayed to police.
Police arrived at Spence’s apartment complex, found Carter’s body and took Spence into custody. Spence said Carter came into his home with a baseball bat demanding money. Spence said he felt threatened and grabbed a knife to defend himself.
Prosecutors said Carter was killed seven hours before Spence called his stepmother.
Spence faces several charges, including first-degree murder.
