DETROIT, Mich. — A man sentenced to life in prison for killing his wife was told to ‘burn in hell’ by the victim’s mother during the sentencing hearing.
Detroit News reports that Robert Bashara orchestrated the Jan. 24, 2012 killing of Jane Bashara by paying Joseph Gentz, a handyman, to strangle her in their garage and dump her body in an ally.
“You took Jane’s life, but I want you to live awhile,” Lorraine Engelbrecht, Jane’s mother, said. “I’m not going to be here that long, but every day I live, I want to think about you … rotting in jail, and you burning in hell.”
Julie Rowe, Engelbrecht’s other daughter, also had choice words for her sister’s killer. “Every minute you spend in your slab in your cell … I will come and go as I please,” Rowe said. “And every moment will be all the more sweet knowing you are uncomfortable and miserable … for the rest of your pathetic life.”
Wayne Circuit Judge Vonda Evans said she had no mercy for Bashara as she handed down the sentence.
Gentz pleaded guilty to killing Jane Bashara and is serving up to 28 years in prison. He did not testify during Bashara’s trial.
