SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Officials with the California Medical Facility in Vacaville are investigating an attack by an inmate on a correctional officer Tuesday morning.
About 1:40 a.m., a correctional officer working in the medical facility’s psychiatric services unit was attacked by an inmate with an unidentified weapon. The officer was able to fight off the attack and secure himself in a safe area, according to news release from the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation.
Additional staff members responded and took control of the inmate.
The injured officer was taken to the facility’s medical clinic for initial treatment, then taken to an outside hospital for medical evaluation and treatment. He was later released from the hospital and is reported recovering.
No other staff members were injured.
The inmate was medically evaluated and transferred to another institution.
The motive for the attack, which is being treated as an attempted homicide, is not known, officials said. The incident is being investigated by the California Medical Facility’s Investigative Services Unit.
