Calif. inmate shot, killed by officer breaking up fight

Officer fired a warning shot to get two inmates beating up a third to stop, but was required to shoot an inmate to end fight

FRESNO, Calif. — A Kern Valley State Prison correctional officer fatally shot an inmate who was attacking another inmate.

ABC News reports that two inmates attacked a third inmate who fell unconscious during the beating.

A correctional officer fired a warning shot in an attempt to stop the attack, but the inmates did not stop. The officer then fired at one of the attackers; that inmate was airlifted to a nearby hospital where he died.

The inmate being beaten was also transported to a nearby hospital for head trauma.

A Deadly Force Investigations Team is investigating the incident. A review board will also be looking into the incident.
