WINNIPEG — A van transporting six prisoners from The Pas to Dauphin crashed on Thursday, taking the life of a corrections officer.
Global News reports that the officer who was driving lost control of the van and hit a ditch, rolling and stopping in the trees.
Another officer who was a passenger in the van was thrown from the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene. It was unclear if she was wearing a seatbelt or not.
The CBC reports that the officer was Rhonda Commodore, 44. She was the single mother of a young son.
Road conditions are believed to have played a part in the crash; snow had fallen in the area on Wednesday.
The officer who had been driving was taken to a nearby hospital in stable condition. All six prisoners were taken to the hospital as well and treated for minor injuries.
An investigation into the incident is still underway.
