LOMPOC, Calif. — A local post office in Lompoc will be rechristened in honor of a correctional officer who was killed in the line of duty 18 years ago.
The Lompoc Record reports that the post office on W. Ocean Ave. will be officially renamed the Federal Correctional Officer Scott J. Williams Memorial Post Office.
A ceremony to mark the occasion is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m.
“Naming this post office after Senior Officer Specialist Williams is a fitting tribute to a man who dedicated his life to serving his country with valor,” said Rep. Lois Capps, who initially introduced the bill to rename the post office last September.
Williams was killed at the U.S. Penitentiary at Lompoc on April 3, 1997, when an inmate stabbed him in the neck. He is survived by his wife, Kristy, and two daughters.
He was a U.S. Marine and received multiple awards, including Marine of the Year.
Williams has also been honored in other ways since his death, including a statue that stands in Scott Williams Memorial Park. A stretch of highway was also named the Federal Correctional Officer Scott Williams Memorial Highway.
