SACRAMENTO, Calif. — A California corrections officer is recovering after authorities say an inmate attacked him with an improvised weapon inside California State Prison, Sacramento.

The incident happened around 10:15 a.m. on March 9 in a cell block at the Folsom-area prison when inmate Jon C. Blaylock, 56, allegedly attacked a correctional officer, causing multiple puncture wounds, according to the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation.

Staff quickly responded to stop the attack, CDCR said.

Institution medical personnel treated the officer at the scene before he was transported to an outside medical facility for additional care. The officer is reported to be in good condition and awaiting discharge.

An improvised weapon was recovered at the scene.

Blaylock has been placed in restricted housing while the incident is investigated. CDCR said the case will be referred to the Sacramento County District Attorney’s Office for possible felony prosecution.

Peer support and other support services are being offered to employees following the incident.

Inmate previously convicted of killing CO in prison

According to CDCR, Blaylock was most recently received from Los Angeles County on June 23, 2004, after being sentenced to life with the possibility of parole for attempted first-degree murder of a peace officer or firefighter as a third striker. His sentence included enhancements for discharge and use of a firearm and a prior serious felony conviction.

While incarcerated, he received additional life sentences for violent offenses.

In November 2014, Blaylock was sentenced in Los Angeles County to life with the possibility of parole for assault by an incarcerated person with a deadly weapon or force likely to cause great bodily injury as a third striker.

More recently, in August 2023, he was sentenced in San Bernardino County to life without parole for the in-prison second-degree murder of Chino Corrections Officer Manuel Gonzalez, with an enhancement for personal use of a dangerous or deadly weapon. Manuel was stabbed to death by Blaylock in 2005, according to KTLA.
