GERING, Neb. — Gering locals gathered together during sunrise to honor the memory of a corrections officer killed one year ago today.
KOTA TV reports that seventy locals and correctional staff walked to remember Correctional Officer Amanda Baker, who was strangled by a juvenile inmate after being lured into his cell.
“It’s mostly about remembering her soul, remembering her spirit, celebrating who she was as a person because she was just one of those people that everybody loved,” said Asha Martin, a friend of Baker.
The Star Herald reports that the walk started with an honor guard ceremony, raising the American flag to half staff, and then a prayer and poem written by a coworker of Barker’s were read. All the participants walked three miles.
Donations can be made ‘In Memory of Officer Amanda Baker’ to the National Law Enforcement Memorial Fund.
