TROY, Ohio — Miami County Jail is looking for a commissary kiosk system to save time for staff and ease access for inmates.
According to Dayton Daily News, the county commissioners opened bids for the system on May 20 and are currently reviewing bids from Swanson’s Service Corp and Sheehan Brothers Vending.
The kiosk system would end the need for staff to hand out items purchased by inmates through the commissary system. Each jail pod would have its own kiosk, and inmates would use an assigned card to purchase items they want if they have money in their account.
The system would generate reports on what inmates were purchasing.
Kiosks would also be available for friends and family members to deposit money into an inmate’s account.
“It’s a win for corrections staff and inmates alike, and should cost the county no money,” said Chief Deputy Dave Duchak.
Both the contract company and the sheriff’s office would receive a percentage of an inmate’s purchase. That money would be placed in an indigent fund to be used by inmates with no money.
