MONTGOMERY, Ala. — An inmate at an Alabama women’s prison is set to testify about how prisoners who are HIV-positive were segregated from other inmates.
AL.com reports that Dana Harley is set to testify Tuesday on a lawsuit settlement that ended the segregation policies at Julia Tutwiler Prison.
Last month, Tutwiler moved Harley and seven other HIV-positive inmates into the prison’s general population, 1 of the final steps toward treating them like other inmates.
American Civil Liberties Union lawyer Margaret Winter is the lead counsel in the 2011 class action lawsuit that ended the segregation. She said Tuesday’s hearing is for a judge to assess the fairness of the agreement between the plaintiffs and the Department of Corrections.
DOC spokesman Brian Corbett said the department won’t comment before Tuesday’s hearing.
