MEDFORD, Ore. — The basement of the Jackson County Jail, which houses about 62 inmates, will be closed due to a staff shortage.
The Mail Tribune reports that $2.7 million was spent to remodel the basement last year to house the additional inmates. After the basement is closed, capacity at the jail will fall from 292 to 230 inmates.
Sheriff Corey Falls says the jail has lost seven staff members. The hiring process is underway, but Falls says it may take up to a year to hire someone suitable for the job.
Jackson County Commissioner Rick Dyer says the county is prepared with the necessary funds to train and hire the needed personnel.
Authorities say the inmates will be moved gradually to other floors with a deadline for closure by Dec. 14.
