CANBERRA — A photo posted by an inmate showing himself and another convict has sparked outrage and calls for reviews into a prison’s security.
ABC News reports that the two inmates are currently serving time at the Alexander Maconochie Center (AMC). The inmate responsible for the post, Harley Stott, is featured in the photo along with Anthony Catanzariti as they both pose inside a cell.
Stott’s Facebook page also shows a number of late night posts.
The jail has a history of inmates using social media behind bars through contraband cell phones – phones were also used to leak footage of a fight inside the jail.
Oppositions Corrections spokesman Andrew wall called for a review into security at the facility, saying the Facebook posts were “extremely concerning.”
“I think these types of breaches … highlight that the security systems of this facility are simply not up to scratch,” he said. “I’m reinforcing the previous calls that I and the Opposition have made to review the security practices at the jail and to look at what is done nationally and internationally as best practice t curtail this behavior.”
Corrections Minister Shane Rattenbury said that ACT Corrective Services continually adapted strategies to detect contraband, including regular searches of cells and common areas.
