The stab wounds suffered by Joran van der Sloot while incarcerated are said to be self-inflicted, according to prison officials.
The NY Daily News reports that photos released of his injuries appeared far less serious than initially claimed and did not require surgery.
Van der Sloot’s attorney previously described the injuries as “at least two inches deep.”
Peruvian Prison Chief Jose Luis Perez Guadalupe has since waved off van der Sloot’s cries as self-inflicted.
He told the Daily Beast that van der Sloot’s wife, Leidy Figueroa, is a compulsive liar and says she may have even helped van der Sloot injure himself.
“His wife went for the visit and suddenly started to complain about the cuts,” Guadalupe said. “It’s a self-fulfilled prophecy. Everything indicates he self-inflicted those cuts.”
Van der Sloot has been moved to another facility after the claimed attack.
