LONDON — The correctional officer who was beaten to death by an inmate during a prisoner transport from court to a waiting transport van has saved five lives through organ donation.
The Standard reports that Lorraine Barwell was added to the organ donor list in the minutes before her life support was switched off at the request of her family.
“We looked at each other and knew it was right. We knew it’s what mum would have wanted,” Jason Barwell, her son, said. “My mum would have given anything to anyone up to the last moment of her life.
“She died for no reason but for her to give life to others through her death is something we can hold on to. Our mum saved five lives, we couldn’t be prouder of her.
“She was an amazing woman and we’ll miss her so much.”
Barwell’s heart and kidneys were among the organs donated.
Barwell’s family is demanding an investigation into an alleged ‘lack of protection’ by the security company they say makes it ‘partly to blame’ for her death.
The incident is being investigated by the Ministry of Justice and Serco. A Met Police murder investigation has also been launched.
Barwell is considered to be the first prisoner custody officer to be killed on duty.
