CLEVELAND — Family, friends and department members are mourning the sudden death of a corrections officer.

Cleveland19.com reported that Luis Castrillon, a 26-year-old corrections officer with the Lake County Sheriff’s Office, died suddenly from a medical issue on Monday. He was hired as a corrections officer by the department in February 2020.

“Luis was extremely energetic, a fast learner, and someone you could always count on to light up your day with his smile and excitement for his career in corrections,” Sheriff Frank Leonbruno wrote on Facebook. “He had an uncanny way of making others feel good about themselves.”

Castrillon had previously worked at the Lake Erie Correctional facility. “His fellow officers there spoke highly of him and his ability to deal with people in very tense situations,” Leonbruno continued.

Leonbruno said Castrillon wanted to work with the Lake County Sheriff’s Office for a “wider variety of opportunities and a better future for him and his fiancé Omisha.”

“We pray for Luis and his family during this time and express our condolences as his fellow officers and co-workers,” Leonbruno said. “We are better because of the chance we had to know him. He will be greatly missed.”
