COLUMBUS, Ohio — An Ohio corrections officer who was attacked and killed by an inmate on Christmas Day was honored posthumously on Friday.
Corrections Officer Andrew Lansing, who served at Ross Correctional Institution (RCI), died on Dec. 25, 2024, after being beaten to death by inmate Rashawn Cannon. In March, Cannon was indicted by a grand jury on two counts of aggravated murder and is also facing a third count of the same charge.
Lansing was named the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction’s 2025 Ronald C. Marshall Correction Officer of the Year, an award given to an officer who “best personifies the agency’s core values,” the department told 10TV.com. In his honor, RCI also renamed its roll call room the “Andrew Lansing Roll Call Room.”
“Officer Lansing trained many staff members,” said RCI Warden Bill Cool. “He took great pride in teaching new staff how to be firm, fair and consistent. Andrew was a true leader. His heart was larger than his body and he was always willing to help anybody. We continue to grieve his loss at RCI.”
