NASHVILLE, Tenn. — A group of inmates are being applauded after they jumped in to save a corrections officer who was choking, WSMV reports.

A female corrections officer at the Downtown Detention Center in Nashville began choking at the facility on Aug. 5. The inmates noticed the officer was in distress and immediately came to her aid.

Davidson County Sheriff Daron Hall stated that the inmates “provided critical, lifesaving assistance” to the officer. One inmate effectively performed the Heimlich maneuver, which cleared the obstruction and allowed her to breathe again. After the officer lost consciousness, an inmate picked up her radio and called other corrections officers for help, WSMV reports. The inmates continued to care for her until medical personnel arrived.

“The bravery and humanity displayed by these individuals is commendable,” Hall told WSMV. “Their quick response not only saved a life but also exemplifies the potential for positive actions in all circumstances.”
