LAKE COUNTY — Vermont inmates being housed in Kentucky and Arizona have been moved to a now re-opened facility in Michigan.

MLive reports that 252 inmates from Kentucky were transferred to the North Lake Correctional Facility on June 29, while another 48 from Arizona were transferred June 30.

The Baldwin facility is owned and operated by the GEO Group and was previously the Michigan Youth Correctional Facility, also known as the “punk” prison.

The GEO Group’s contract with the state regarding the juvenile facility was terminated in 2005, but a 2006 law allowed the company to use the facility to house inmates from other states.

The company has contracts with Vermont to house up to 675 of its inmates, and with Washington state for up to 1,000 of its inmates.

The facility has a capacity of 1,740.
