TRENTON, N.J. — After weeks of agony, Jerome Grundy was rewarded with his goal – to be part of the 231st graduating class of New Jersey corrections officers last month.
NJ.com reports that Grundy, 55, was the oldest graduate at double the average age of most recruits. Not only that, he finished 16 weeks of training running at the front of his squad.
“I popped a lot of Advil,” he says. “I was real sore, but I did it.”
This is Grundy’s third career, after being unemployed for years due to the topsy-turvy economy.
He attributes his ability to complete the academy to his military training, due to enlisting in the Army after high school and serving in air defense and infantry.
“I tell my children, don’t let anything discourage you. You’re your own best judge of your capabilities.”
