IONIA COUNTY, Mich. — An investigation is underway into how three .22-caliber bullets got onto an Ionia Correctional Facility inmate’s breakfast tray.
MLive reports that an officer spotted the bullets before the tray went into the inmate’s cell.
No guns or other rounds were found inside the facility after it was locked down and thoroughly searched.
The breakfast trays are prepared by inmates overseen by contracted Aramark workers, and then sealed. Prisoners also deliver the trays to other inmates who are still in their cells, and are overseen by corrections officers.
Video surveillance is being reviewed and interviews are being conducted inside the facility.
“We’re trying to figure out who did it, and how they were able to get it into the facility,” said spokesman Chris Gautz. Though the bullets on their own didn’t pose a risk, “obviously you don’t want to have bullets in a prison.”
Aramark has been under fire this past year for issues with its work inside prisons. Over 100 Aramark employees have been barred from working inside the prison system.
No one has been identified as the culprit yet.
