JESSUP, Md. — A former Maryland Department of Corrections officer has been charged in connection with a series of shootings in the Baltimore-Washington D.C. corridor.
The Capital Gazette reports that Hong Young, 35, was arrested by police Tuesday night and as of Wednesday is being held under guard at a local hospital.
Only two people were injured in the string of incidents, but county Police Chief Timothy Altomare noted that more tragic consequences have been averted.
“Everybody that has been victimized by this person is alive and well,” Altomare said.
Young has been linked to shootings near Arundel Mills mall, Laurel, Columbia and the Inter County Connector in Prince George’s County.
Two officers spotted Young’s car on Arundel Mills Circle while conducting a traffic stop, which is the same area where a man was shot last week. The vehicle was tied to one of the scenes through surveillance footage.
They also spotted shell casings along with a handgun inside the town car. The gun was connected to four of the five shootings and was legally registered to Young.
Young was taken into custody without incident and is said to be cooperating with police. There is not yet a motive in the shootings.
Young was employed with the Maryland DOC from Jan. 2012 to May 2014, when he resigned.
A review of Young’s tenure as a correctional officer revealed no significant incidents.
