DARLINGTON COUNTY, SC — A clothes dryer at the Darlington County Detention Center caught fire Friday morning, forcing a temporary evacuation of the jail’s housing units.
The fire started inside the dryer vent at about 8:30 a.m., causing flames to shoot out the front and back of the machine, according to Warden Major Mitch Stanley with the Darlington County Detention Center.
All four housing units were evacuated into the yard, and street deputies were called in to watch the prisoners, Stanley said. One officer and the warden put out the fire with fire extinguishers.
