EAST HOPEWELL TOWNSHIP, Penn. — A drifter accused of a Fawn Township stranger-rape was captured late last night in East Hopewell Township after escaping from a Maryland psychiatric hospital, police said.
Paul Douglas McGlothlin Jr., 32, who has lived in various places in southern York County, will be taken to York County Prison after being arraigned at the York County Central Booking Unit, police said.
Pennsylvania State Police said McGlothlin escaped from the Spring Grove Hospital Center in Catonsville, Md. Details about how he got out are scarce, but he apparently escaped out a window, police said.
“There’s not a lot of good answers as to when he got out, or how,” said Cpl. Jeff Rineer of the Loganville barracks.
McGlothlin was being held in the psychiatric unit to determine if he was mentally competent to stand trial for various offenses in Maryland, police said.
State police from Pennsylvania and Maryland, along with U.S. marshals, created a joint task force and began the search yesterday, sometime in the late morning, police said.
They learned McGlothlin was in Red Lion, and PSP Trooper Brian Torkar found him there, police said.
High-speed chase: But when Torkar tried to apprehend McGlothlin, the fugitive fled on a stolen motorcycle, leading police on a high-speed chase on Route 74, at which point York Area Regional Police joined the pursuit.
The chase continued on Stamper Road and Muddy Creek Forks Road, where McGlothlin ditched the motorcycle in the area of Veach Road and fled on foot, police said.
York Area Regional Officer Michael Sampere and his K-9 partner, Brando, located McGlothlin hiding along a stream, police said.
McGlothlin assaulted Brando trying to escape, but the dog bit him and he was captured, state police said.
The dog was unhurt, police said.
McGlothlin will now remain in York County to face charges here before going back to Maryland, according to Rineer.
“We’re going to keep him,” he said.
McGlothlin is also facing new charges for being a fugitive from justice, fleeing from police and assault on a K-9 dog, police said.
Rape allegations: Last Tuesday, state police in York County charged McGlothlin with rape after DNA evidence linked him to the Nov. 20 kidnapping and rape of a 22-year-old woman in Fawn Township.
In that attack, troopers said, McGlothlin flashed his headlights at the woman as both were driving on Route 851. When the woman stopped, McGlothlin allegedly grabbed her by the hair, pulled her into his vehicle and then took her to a nearby field and raped her.
Before driving her back to her car, he took her to a private road in the township and raped her a second time, police said.
Moved to hospital: When Pennsylvania State Police filed the rape charges last week, police in Maryland had already taken McGlothlin into custody on charges of burglary and theft.
On Aug. 14, a court order sent McGlothlin from the Harford County Detention Center to the Spring Grove Hospital Center, which is west of Baltimore, according to Maryland State Police.
McGlothlin has lived in numerous places in York County, including Chanceford Township, Delta, Airville and Fawn Grove. He’s also lived in Maryland towns of Aberdeen, Bel Air and Havre de Grace.
He has an extensive criminal history in York County and was ordered to undergo sexual-offender counseling after he pleaded guilty to two indecent-exposure cases in 2004 and 2005.
