SAFFORD — Officers, friends and family members gathered Monday, June 3, at the Federal Correctional Institute-Safford for a remembrance of federal correctional officers who lost their lives while on duty.

As the names of each of the 25 federal corrections officers killed in the line of duty over the past 112 years were called by Tucker Lucas, a respectfully somber officer placed a long-stem rose into a vase that stood as part of a memorial display for the deceased officers. Following the rose ceremony, an eight-person honor guard presented a 21-gun salute.

“It makes me proud to be a part of the (Federal) Bureau (of Prisons), to honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice,” said Greg Burke, superintendent of Industry for FCI-Safford. “We don’t forget.”
