ORLANDO, Fla. — An Orange County corrections officer suffered serious injuries after she was attacked by an inmate at Orlando Regional Medical Center on Wednesday, according to the corrections department.

Spokeswoman Carrie Proudfit said the inmate, Asniel Pino, 26, was receiving treatment at the hospital around 5:20 p.m. when the attack happened. The officer was supervising the inmate and is assigned to the hospital unit, said Proudfit. The officer’s injuries are not considered to be life threatening.

According to Orlando police Lt. John Holysz, Pino used an object to assault the officer in her face and head. He declined to identify the object other than to say it was not a firearm. Pino was at the hospital for a minor health issue, Holysz said.

The officer was alone when the attack happened and ORMC security came to her aide after she sent out an alert, he said.

She received treatment at ORMC and was released, Proudfit said. Pino is in custody.

The incident remains under investigation. Pino faces additional charges of attempted first-degree murder of a law enforcement officer and aggravated battery on a corrections officer, according to jail records.

Orange County court records show Pino was arrested on June 26 on charges of aggravated assault of a law enforcement officer with a vehicle, fleeing and eluding and petty theft. He pleaded no contest to third-degree grand theft last year and sentenced to 18 months probation, according to the Florida Department of Corrections.

The name of the officer was not released.
