VIENNA, Ill. — A union official says an inmate attacked a southern Illinois corrections officer, who suffered a broken jaw and needed a dozen stitches.
Jeremy Noelle tells WSIL-TV that the officer was assaulted Friday morning at the Shawnee Correctional Center in Vienna. He likely will need surgery.
There was no immediate word on charges involving the inmate. WSIL reports it’s the fifth time he has assaulted a corrections officer while behind bars. One of the attacks was in 1991 and the other three in 2011.
WSIL says the inmate now has been relocated to the maximum-security Menard Correctional Center near Chester.
Noelle says the guard was released from the hospital later Friday.
A message seeking comment was left Monday with the Illinois Department of Corrections.
