SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Correctional officers shot an inmate at the state prison near Susanville Wednesday to stop him from kicking another prisoner in the head, officials said.
The outbreak of violence began about 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at High Desert State Prison. Three inmates were seen kicking a 33-year-old convicted murderer from Los Angeles County in the head.
Prison staff ordered the assault to stop. The assailants, two convicted of drug charges and the third a kidnapper, failed to stop kicking, according to a prison press release.
Officers then fired two warning shots, which still did not stop the assault, officials said. Finally, one of the inmates was shot by an officer. The prisoner, a 36-year-old from Los Angeles County convicted of drug possession, suffered a gunshot wound in the hip.
